Hi, my name is Bryan, and I’m a first time blogger. <Hi, Bryan> And I’m a blogging skeptic. <gasp!>
Here’s my deal. Blogging always seemed to me like the second coming of the personal home page. “Everyone can have a home page!” It starts with a few test messages, then a month or two of posting links and personal stories and pictures that only a mother could love, and then begins the slow fade in to stagnant silence as the author loses interest or runs out of things to say.
There is a flip side, though. As a software engineer, I’ve found some very useful content on blogs here and there. It’s few and far between, and not always easy to find. But it does exist: interesting thoughts, mini white papers, some of the more interesting and timely whats, hows and whys of the industry.
So that’s where I stood for a while on blogging: undecided and moreover uninterested.
How did I end up here, then? Well, mainly because blogging was pitched to me from a different angle, albeit a slightly selfish one. Blogging could serve as an additional force, driving me to continue learning new things related to technology and software development. Add to that a well organized site to post on, a site that may actually attract some visitors, and I started to get interested. I’ve had a few side projects and topics floating around in my head for a while, some of which I think could be interesting to others, but I never seem to get to them. So maybe by putting myself under a little artificial blogging pressure, I can learn some cool new things, share a few useful thoughts, practice my writing…oh, and try to do it without adding to the noise pollution.
So there you have it, folks: my goal. I won’t promise any metrics around quantity, but I will shoot for quality.
Why the long discourse? Maybe I’m hedging in case this falls apart around me. Maybe I’m just worried that no one will ever read this. Are you out there? Clearly I’m still a bit skeptical. But there’s only one way to find out what it’s all about…
So stay tuned. I plan start this blogging experiment by playing around with two of my favorite technology concepts, video games and gadgets.
The challenge: Build Pac-man for my Smartphone.
